The reason why every American should be upset about the Swift Boat ads

Joe Klein wrote an excellent article in this week's Time Magazine (reprinted on CNN). The national discussion has shifted to a war that is over 30 years old instead of the real problems of today that deserve an honest discussion.

Are you at all concerned that it is John Kerry, not the Republicans, who chose to make Vietnam the focal point of his campaign (at least before the Swifties started doing their damage)? With that in mind, I agree with you about the irrelevance of Vietnam to modern politics. It's kind of a shame to watch a Dem contender go down in flames simply because he doesn't have anything else to talk about.

Am I concerned that Kerry decided to make Vietnam such a strong focal point of his canidacy? Yes, I am. But I also completely understand why his campaign did it. Republicans always try to unfairly paint Democrats as weak on defense--in fact they are still trying to do it to Kerry. Deep down Republicans know that Kerry would me much tougher (and in an intelligent rather than a stupidly macho way such as Bush)---why else did they have to resort to lies about Kerry?
