Unhappy Workers Should Take Prozac according to Bush Campaigner

I have a few questions:

Will the Bush campaign be supplying the Prozac?
Is this part of the prescription drug plan that I keep hearing about?
Where are these new jobs for unhappy workers?

How soon until this person will be fired?

The Breakfast Club

I broke my week of movies streak, and I can't even blame it on my wife. Friday night I just couldn't find a movie that I was willing to go see alone. There were a few girly movies that I would have gone to with my wife with me, but the idea of sitting through 13 going on 30 or some other similar film in a room full of adolescent girls seemed just a little too creepy to me. So the streak started...I justified it by saying that I would watch a film at home. I started watching Dickie Roberts: Former Child Actor but I ended up falling asleep part way through it.

Which brings me to Saturday night, the local cinema drafthouse-Studio35, has late night classic movies and this week's movie was, The Breakfast Club. I hadn't seen it on a big screen since I was in High School so I figured what the heck. I've watched the movie a million times on video, but a big screen would definitely be something different. The thing I noticed most was how big a part the music played in the movie---when I watch a video at home it seems as if the music usually gets washed away.

Was the movie good on its own, or was it good for nostalgia's sake? I think it was good on its own. It was still funny in all the right places. But I kept asking myself where would all these characters be at this place in time? Who would the outcasts be 20 years later? I'm guess Brian (the nerd) or Andrew (the jock)? Why is Brian the one who doesn't get to hook up at the end of the movie? Given the timeline of the movie---Richard Vernon would be at about retirement age, did he really last 20 more years in the education field? I think most likely not---I'm guessing he is selling life insurance.

Lost in My Own Backyard: A Walk in Yellowstone National Park (Crown Journeys Series) by Tim Cahill

I have another blog where I review children's literature---booksforkids.blogspot.com, but I also occasionally like to read other books also. So here are my thoughts about it.

I love Tim Cahill's writing. He never fails to make me laugh and smirk. And he certainly did that with his new book about Yellowstone National Park. When referring to his "backyard" he means this in two ways, 1) he lives in the vicinity of the park, and 2) the national park, is a backyard for all Americans.

There are so many spectacular things that he wants to share with us about this park. Its history, geology, and wildlife being foremost. He is also fascinated with the wide variety of ways that one can and does die in the park.

The book really has me in a mood to go back to Yellowstone---I've been there 3 times (age 3, age 8, and age 25). I know I should be trying to see new places, but I want to go back and look at the park with the new eyes that Tim Cahill has given me.

Hidalgo

My Thursday night entry for a week of movies. Another good summer popcorn movie....I really don't understand why this movie didn't do better. Excellent action, beautiful scenery. Of course you knew that Frank Hopkins was going to win the race....but there is still the unpredictability of how he was going to win the race. Easily worth the $1.50 that I spent to see this film.

I, Robot

I hadn't been keeping up with my week of movies listings. I had the hardest time trying to remember what I saw on Wednesday night----I guess that doesn't say good things about I, Robot.

The thing is I actually liked the movie. It was a very good summer popcorn action flick---plus Bridget Moynahan is a babe. The plot seemed to get a little jumbled by the end of the movie, but it did serve its purpose.

Movie Commercials

The one thing I have learned in this attempt to see movies every day for a week is that the ads that are played before movies get old really fast.  I can see these movies 2 or 3 times before I am completely sick of them.  Have you seen the Fanta commercial with the brightly dressed girls singing and waterskiing? Yikes.  The one I still can't figure out is Bod....it is some sort of scent that men are supposed to spray on themselves---personally it looks like window cleaner.  Well I guess some people like to by weird crap!

Luckily I've been about 10 minutes late to the movies the last few times I have gone, so I've eliminated some of the torture from my life.  If only I could get rid of the people who feel they must talk through an entire movie.

I was worrying that I wasn't letting out enough discontent on this blog to justify its title....I guess I don't have to worry about that with this entry.

My life is rated R.

My life is rated R.
What is your life rated?

It's hard to believe, because I've always pictured myself as a PG or a PG-13 sort of guy. Funny quiz though....

Before Sunset

I loved Before Sunrise, in fact the movie helped to inspire my own trip to Europe during the summer of 1995. Unfortunately for me---I never ended up with Celine, Julie Delpy, or any other French women for that matter. I did fall in love half a dozen or so times on that trip---but none of the women ever knew my feelings. But that is not the point of this entry. Even though I never met my own "Celine", the trip did inspire a love of international travel.

The news of a sequel completely caught me off guard. I was intriqued and scared at the same time. Could a sequel possibly ruin the original movie and its very ambiguous conclusion? Yet as soon as I heard there was a sequel I wanted to see it.

The sequel did not disappoint in the least. The two characters have grown older, wiser, and more cynical. Maybe that is why I identify with both these movies so well---my life tracks along with theirs.

Much like the first movie, Before Sunset is one long conversation last approximately 80 minutes. Instead of taking place in Vienna it takes place in Paris. And much like the first movie it ends very ambiguously. Did they or didn't they? That is the question. I myself don't know, I could see it both ways. This might have to be a movie that I see a second time before I can truly discuss it anymore. Needless to say....this is a fantastic movie. If you haven't seen Before Sunrise go rent it, and then go see Before Sunset.

One interesting thing about seeing this movie....I was expecting an audience in their mid 20's to mid 30's...and there was that crowd. But there was also a sizable audience of late 50's-to late 60's females.....very interesting!

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

Well the wife is out of town for the next week because of work, so I thought this would be a fantastic time to try my movie everyday for a week. Well Tuesday night is 50 cent night at the Bargain theatre, so I started my week out with two movies.

1. Man on Fire with Denzel Washington. I did enjoy this movie---it had a very interesting visual quality for an action movie. Even the subtitles were done in a unique way (changing text sizes, fading of subtitles, varied placement of subtitles). But basically this was a blood fest of a movie. Denzel plays one pissed off bodyguard---at one point he even detonates plastic explosives that he had rammed up the ass of one of the bad guys. Not a pretty sight (visually or mentally)!

2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- I had wanted to see this movie ever since it came out, but I kept putting it off because I wasn't ever sure if I was in the right mood to see it. Wow! What a movie! The whole time through the movie I am thinking and processing the movie. I kept thinking about what if? I kept thinking about wanting to talk with one of my old psychology professors about the psychological implications of this movie? Are memories and personality one in the same? If we lose one do we lose the other? That is the bad thing about going to the movies alone.....occasionally there are those movies that need to be discussed afterward. This is one of those movies. A big thumbs up. Has Charlie Kaufman been involved with a crappy movie yet? This really was a fantastic role for Jim Carrey---though there are comedic moments he never gets carried away. I really had forgotten it was Jim Carrey for most of the movie---he was just some guy trying to get over being dumped.

Election Troubles Already Descending on Florida

Oh Crap!!!!

More Speculation on Cheney

So the NY Times is at least a better source than the Drudge Report. It was interesting to read their list of possible replacements. I can't believe I forgot to put Guliani on my list (moderate and he helps confuse the Northeast).

Cheney quitting?

I know the Drudge Report needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but what if this is true? Who is more likely to vote for Bush without Cheney? It doesn't change the fact that Bush is a narrow-minded right wing extremist who has done no good for our country. Plus if Cheney isn't around to pull the strings, who will control Bush?

These are my guesses for Vice President replacements. None of them would make me vote for Bush by the way.

1. Jeb Bush (he has to pay back his brother for the 2000 election)
2. John McCain (Kerry wanted him, but couldn't get him, appeal to independent voters)
3. Colin Powell (he would allow the Republican ticket to appear more moderate)
4. Condoleza Rice
5. Tommy Thompson (current secretary, former-4 time govenor of Wisconsin a must win up for grabs state)
6. Ralph Nader (the Republicans are already paying to get him on the ballot to try and skew the election, why not just put him on their own ticket)
7. Tom Ridge (an attempt to show that Homeland security is a priority---also helps him with Pennsylvania another must win state)

The question is who would really want to be associated with Bush at this point?

I hope this story does come out about Cheny...so people can see once again how manipulative the Republicans have become.

Coming out from the shadows

My wife and I have been in Columbus for a little over a year now, and it is weird but I think we might actually have become part of our community. I ran into people twice today that I knew (once at work, and once while out to eat). This is a strange sensation after having been able to go anywhere without being noticed for the past year.

Ladykillers

This was a funny movie. Like all of the Coen Brothers' movies it was quirky and over the top, but there was always something for me to laugh about. I might be restarting my movie a day plan.....I'm not sure yet. There are still several flicks that I want to see at the local dollar theatre.

Non-stop movie plan thwarted by wife

Yes I had said earlier that I was going to see movies for at least a week straight. Well it crumbled to pieces. I went Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Well on Wednesday my wife had different plans for me....so it blew my shot at a week straight. I will complete this mission before my summer is over. That I vow!

ANCHORMAN

I went and saw Anchorman with my wife, brother-in-law, and his girlfriend this afternoon. It was a funny movie. Dumb, silly fun, but never the less funny. I really wasn't sure if I was going to like it, it wasn't on my list of movies to see but everyone else wanted to see it. I laughed almost constantly through the movie. But it was also one of those movies that don't linger in your head that long---if you asked me to tell you any real details of the story at this point I doubt that I could. But it did what it was supposed to do...it was a fun silly mindless summer movie.

Reason #657 not to vote for Bush

Why are people not more afraid of Bush and his cronies?? Why would you keep science hidden? I understand the need for a debate about the ethical implications of some scientific research, but I can't accept the fact that you would keep the research from happening in the first place, or worse yet only having research done by those that would be willing to support your point of view. Scientific research is the closest thing we will ever have to objective decision making. Who the hell cares about being objective anymore?

Van Helsing

I'm trying to see how many nights in a row I can go to the movies. This is day number 3. Lucky for me it is also 50 cent night at my cheapo theatre, and I don't have to start work until noon on Wednesday.

What can I say about Van Helsing.....it is cheesy beyond belief. The first half I was enjoying this story of a vampire/evil hunter. But the second half the action became to ridiculous (and unbelievable). Unbelievable in the sense that several accidents in a row happened that benefited the good guys. I don't mind unbelievable action in an action movie.....but there has to be something guiding it. The characters weren't controlling the action--the writers were.

Another minus....it was way too long, close to 2.5 hours.

Oh well it was 50 cents....I shouldn't complain too much.

Spider-Man 2

I went and saw Spider-Man 2 on the 4th of July. I liked the movie and it dealt alot more with the psychological aspect of being a superhero (though I think things worked out a little too nicely for Peter Parker/Spiderman and Mary Jane) at the end of the movie. Even though I liked the movie, I was really fidgety during it....so I'm not sure if that says something about me or the movie.

Saved!

Went and saw the movie Saved! at the budget theatre today. It was $1.00 well spent. I have a weakness for teen comedies---and this was a unique one. A teen comedy about religious intolerance---with lots of funny one-liners. Plus I think it was the first movie with Macaulay Culkin where I wasn't thinking...."Hey its that Home Alone kid!"
